I recognize the privilege I hold in being able to speak on eating healthy and working out multiple times a day. I was a figure skater for the majority of my life and had multiple coaches along with a strength trainer who all helped contribute to the development of my athleticism and further reinforced the importance of health and wellness as I grew up. I have great access to healthy, and nutritious foods which allows me to eat essentially anything I want without worrying about how processed or full of chemicals it is. I have an unlimited monthly hot yoga membership and also have a Pilates membership. Most of all, I have the privilege of time— to do all these activities.
That’s not to say you need all these seemingly fancy things to keep wellness in your life. Health and wellness are accessible in different forms, and they don’t always require an abundance of resources. Wellness can start small—maybe it’s taking 10 minutes to stretch or go for a walk outside. It could be practicing mindfulness during meals, appreciating what you have, and making the most of what’s available. Wellness doesn’t have to mean expensive workouts or following the latest health trends; it can be as simple as drinking more water throughout the day, breathing deeply when you’re feeling overwhelmed, or finding moments of calm amidst a busy schedule.
For me, my journey has been supported by privileges, but I’ve come to realize that wellness is more about mindset than material things. At its core, it’s about prioritizing yourself and making intentional choices for your body and mind, even in small ways. You don’t need access to a gym or a perfectly curated diet to feel good. Finding balance and joy in the little things—like moving your body in ways that feel good or enjoying a wholesome meal—can make all the difference.
Ultimately, health is wealth in the sense that the time and energy you invest in yourself now will pay off in the long run, no matter your circumstances. Wellness is about progress, not perfection, and it can take many forms that fit into your life.
